If you have seen James Turrellâ€™s work in person, youâ€™ll appreciate the quality of this volume. If you have not seen his artwork, this is a really good introduction to one of the most amazing artistâ€™s of this Century. This book is the catalogue for a major, year-long retrospective on James Turrell at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art starting in May of 2013. The book is co-authored by LACMA's dynamo director and major Turrell supporter Michael Govan. It is by far the best collection on Turrell's work to date and I highly recommend not only purchasing the book but visiting the museum exhibition, which seems like a blockbuster.To be honest, and I think the authors would agree, any book on Turrell, no matter how great, can't capture the wondrous quality of experiencing his works firsthand, but this book does a spectacular job of exposing the reader to the breadth of Turrell's vision. Like his work, the book takes time and patient attention to absorb and appreciate. A book for a quiet and contemplative day.One glaring weakness of the book is the quizzical lack of an index.
